The Smart Ass Suite elaborates on and takes influence from the struggle of simply surviving a daunting industry. Artists, curators, gallerists, writers, and others in the trade known as “the art world” have a propensity to talk; engaging in utterance, chatter, gossip, bar-blurbs, ramble and banter. Through my conversations with my associates and “notes- to-self”, I have culled a number of overheard and over-thought quips for service in a suite of paintings. These chosen and created epigrams are assigned a font and simple clip-art image in order to reconstruct a meaning or meanings that might exist after one thinks or utters a half-baked idea. When a cluster of paintings develops into a single composition, as in: Do I have to spell it out for you? and Do you see what I mean?, an extended discourse is of inevitable consequence.
